About CRST

CRST International is one of the nation’s largest privately-held transportation companies, providing comprehensive transportation and logistics solutions to customers all over North America. Every year, the company invests millions of dollars so that its customers benefit from having the best-trained drivers, the newest equipment, and the latest logistics technology. The company values the trust invested in it every day as it transports millions of dollars of goods across the nation.

CRST is debt free, fiscally strong, focused on superior service, innovative, professionally managed and community focused. The company continues in a growth mode fueled by several acquisitions in recent years.

Company History

In 1955, Herald and Miriam Smith started Cedar Rapids Steel Transport out of a refurbished chicken coop they bought for $125. At the time, they had no trucks and no customers, but Herald, known as “Smitty,” convinced firms he could save them money. He contracted with owner/operators who were hauling livestock to Chicago to return to the Cedar Rapids area with loads of steel instead of empty trucks. For the next 25 years the company grew rapidly by acquiring struggling franchises and their corresponding load-hauling authority to increase its jurisdiction and capabilities.

In 1980, when the Interstate Commerce Commission deregulated trucking, CRST deftly adapted to the transforming industry. Using entrepreneurial and innovative thinking, CRST capitalized on the new opportunities and experienced explosive growth becoming the largest trucking company in the state of Iowa and increasing its gross revenue by 25 percent. CRST was only the third carrier in the history of the U.S. to receive nationwide operating authority and cracked the top 100 list of the nation’s largest carriers. By 1981, the company was ranked No. 86 and in 1982 it was No. 61. Today it is ranked No. 24.

In 1983, John Smith, Herald’s son, took over leadership of the company. John continued the company’s history of strategic acquisitions for growth. One of the most notable of CRST’s acquisitions was the purchase of Malone Freight Lines of Birmingham, Ala., in 1984. The once struggling flatbed company posted a profit after only one year under CRST and has become the backbone of the company’s flatbed offering. The purchase gave the company a stronger presence in the South and Southeastern U.S.

Also in 1984, CRST changed its name to CRST International to integrate all of its companies under one unified brand umbrella and signify that the company was also doing business outside U.S. borders.

In the mid-1980s CRST began focusing on implementing and perfecting the team driving approach. Team driving wasn’t new, but this was the first time CRST broadly applied it to the company’s advantage and as a solution to meeting changing customer needs for JIT (just in time) inventory management. Team driving allowed CRST to increase efficiency and maintain CRST’s competitive edge, as well as provide reliable service, rapid transit time and on-time deliveries. Today, CRST maintains the largest fleet of team drivers in the industry and is able to provide reliable, safe coast-to-coast transport in less than 60 hours.

CRST has always realized the significance of having an ample supply of qualified drivers. Traditionally, CRST had hired only experienced drivers. However, by the late 1980s, a driver shortage had started to emerge. The company began to focus intensely on recruiting new drivers to the industry, as well as experienced drivers. The company expanded its driver training program to include a week of classroom instruction and two weeks on the road experience. This expansion allowed for more hands-on training with an experienced driver trainer. Safety has always been of high importance to the company, and this investment in driver training has allowed CRST to not only maintain its fleet, but also reduce accident rates. The company has expanded its driver training program numerous times in recent years and is able to accommodate nearly 200 drivers per night in its Cedar Rapids, Iowa, training facility and 90 per night at its Riverside, Calif. driver training facility.

Company leadership changed hands again in 2010 when John Smith transitioned to Chairman of the Board and Dave Rusch, formerly President of the CRST Carrier Group, assumed the position of CRST International President and CEO. Rusch joined the company in 1991 and has played an important role in increasing efficiency, profitability and growth through his various leadership roles.

CRST further increased its capabilities in 2011 with the acquisition of Specialized Transportation, Inc. (STI) of Ft. Wayne, Ind. A leader in white glove, customized supply chain solutions for products requiring high-touch, on-site services or special handling and equipment, added capabilities and customers to CRST’s portfolio.

CRST acquired two additional companies in 2013. In May, the Special Products Division of Allied Van Lines was purchased to complement CRST Specialized Transportation and created the most extensive network of specialized distribution centers in North America. In December, BESL Transfer Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio, was acquired. BESL, a leading provider of short haul, flatbed service complements CRST Malone, one of the nation’s largest providers of long haul, flatbed service.

In 2015, CRST acquired Pegasus Transportation, Inc., based in Louisville, KY. Pegasus is a leading provider of regional truckload services, with a focus on the high-security, temperature sensitive, health sciences sector and the critical, just-in-time automotive industry.

Family owned to this day, CRST has evolved from a trucking firm to one of the nation’s leading providers of logistics and transportation solutions.

Operating companies

CRST International, Inc. is comprised of seven operating companies integrated to create complete transportation and supply chain solutions and provide deep industry expertise. From coast-to-coast runs to irregular routes, seasonal peak needs or “white glove” and temperature-sensitive loads, its seven companies work together to span the transportation industry and deliver a seamless customer experience.

As the nation’s largest team carrier, CRST trains thousands of new drivers every year—and we do it better than anyone else. Approval for the driving program is based on your driving, work and criminal history—not credit checks. CRST will pay the cost of your tuition in return for an ten-month commitment.

History

http://www.crst.com/about/history/

CRST: Rooted in innovation.

Family owned to this day, CRST has evolved from a trucking firm to one of the nation’s leading providers of transportation solutions.

Historical Timeline

The following timeline chronicles CRST’s accomplishments:

CRST Offers Veteran Apprenticeship Program for Drivers Using GI Bill™ Benefits

CRST International Approved by Department of Labor and the Veteran’s Administration to Begin Program to Assist Veterans Transition into Trucking Careers

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa(Aug. 30, 2016)—CRST International, Inc. was approved for the Veteran Apprenticeship Program through the Department of Labor and the Veteran’s Administration. New and current CRST drivers using GI Bill™ benefits may now be eligible to earn additional monthly income as they transition into their new trucking careers with CRST.

Applicants to the 12-month program must be using GI Bill™ benefits to qualify for the program. Veterans will have the opportunity to earn up to an additional $13,400 tax-free from government funding during the 12-month program. The income levels are determined by number of years served and the type of benefits received through the GI Bill™.

“A company is made stronger when its employees are supported, and this program will ensure that our veterans making the transition to becoming CRST drivers have the assistance and support they need to succeed,” said Dave Rusch, CRST International president and CEO. “We provide some of the best training, newest equipment and pay in the industry and having guaranteed home time is another great benefit for veterans as they transition home from deployment.”

The Veteran Apprenticeship Program will complement CRST’s existing Heroes on the Highway military program for veterans joining the transportation industry.

“We’re proud to do all that we can to support our drivers who come to us after military service,” said Jenny Abernathy, CRST vice president of capacity development. “The transition can be difficult, and this program gives our veterans a chance to learn the skills they need while earning a good income.”

Approval for CRST International’s Veteran Apprenticeship Program comes on the heels of the company’s recognition as a 2016 Top 100 Military Friendly Employer.

CRST International, Inc. Named as Top 10 Company
for Leadership Development

Chief Executive Magazine selection based on program designed to nurture and promote current employees to leadership positions

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Jan. 25, 2016) – For the first time CRST, a privately-held transportation company, has been herald as a Top 10 Best Private Company for Leaders according to Chief Executive Magazine. Recently, the magazine announced its top 10 list for public and private companies who exemplify nurturing leaders at various management levels. Rankings are affected by a company’s reputation among its peers, the percent of senior management recruited from internal talent, having a formal leadership process in place and the commitment level of the CEO.

“Every successful company must have a succession plan for future leadership, and our leadership program will ensure that CRST’s management stays strong for decades to come,” said Dave Rusch, CRST International President and CEO.

CRST International, Inc. began implementing a leadership program nearly five years ago and has seen tremendous success. The program is designed to challenge each participant individually to put his or her best skills to work. This program is offered to office employees and identifies professional goals, assesses skills and directs participants on a path to improvement and upward mobility within the company.

“This has lessened the burden on hiring outside the company, even outside the state, for management-level positions and higher,” said Brooke Willey, V.P. Human Resources and leader of the program for CRST. “Prior to the program CRST promoted from within only about 25 percent of its employees. Now that number is closer to 70 percent.”

CRST International, Inc. Celebrates 60th Anniversary

http://www.crst.com/2015/03/crst-international-inc-celebrates-60th-anniversary/

1997-crst-international

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (March 30, 2015) –Sixty years ago, Herald and Miriam Smith started Cedar Rapids Steel Transportation (CRST) in the heart of Iowa. Little did they know, 60 years later, CRST would grow into one of the largest trucking companies in America. At the time, they didn’t own any trucks or have any customers, but Herald, known as “Smitty,” convinced companies he could save them money. He contracted with owner operators who were hauling livestock to Chicago to return to the Cedar Rapids area with loads of steel instead of empty trucks.

CRST remained strong through the decades with industry changes, deregulation and several recessions. While many trucking companies were destroyed by these events, CRST emerged even stronger with zero debt. This enabled the company to reinvest in equipment, technology, employees and owner operators.

“We are very proud to celebrate this milestone,” said Dave Rusch, CRST International President and CEO. “Many things have contributed to our success over the years such as the dedication of our staff, our ability to seize opportunities and our experience within the industry.”

“However, we could never have reached this point without the steadfast support of the Smith family, our customers, business partners and employees,” continued Rusch. “Our strategic plan calls for revenue growth to two billion by 2017. The recent acquisition of Pegasus Transportation several weeks ago, combined with other acquisition activity could expedite this milestone goal.”

Capitalizing on the strengths of its executive and management teams, CRST has evolved from a small trucking company to one of the largest privately-held transportation companies in the U.S. with annual revenues of $1.5 billion. CRST is now the sixth largest truckload carrier in the nation.

CRST remains family owned. John Smith purchased the company from his parents and siblings in 1997 and assumed the role of chairman of the board in 2010. Ian Smith, John’s son, was recently appointed to the CRST International Board of Directors. This appointment continues the family’s commitment to remain privately-owned on to the third generation of the Smith family. Currently, the company is led by a senior management team with more than 250 years of combined experience.

CRST’s success also has allowed extensive capital investments. “We are thrilled to be making another substantial investment into the Cedar Rapids community with the construction of the new CRST corporate headquarters, opening in the spring of 2016,” said John Smith, Chairman of the Board. “This $35 million investment is a reflection of our confidence in the continued growth of CRST, as well as our admiration for the Cedar Rapids community.”

CRST International Breaks Ground on New World Headquarters
Rapid growth spurs development

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (July 31, 2014) – CRST International Inc. Board Chairman John Smith and President and CEO, Dave Rusch, recently broke ground for the transportation company’s new $37 million world headquarters in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

“CRST’s rapid growth over the past several years meant we were out of space in our current buildings. As a longstanding member of the Cedar Rapids business community, we wanted to continue our dedication and commitment to this area as well as provide CRST with the facilities needed to grow far into the future,” said John Smith CRST Board Chairman and board secretary at the American Trucking Association (ATA). “This building is another exciting step in CRST’s future.”

Nearly sixty years ago, the company started hauling steel from Chicago to Cedar Rapids using only leased trucks. Today it coordinates over 750,000 loads a year that are shipped more than 600 million miles.

“Our new building will symbolize several things,” said Dave Rusch, CRST President and CEO. “First the many achievements of CRST over the years, the excitement of approaching $2 billion in revenue over the next few years, the Smith family’s commitment to our community, and finally it recognizes all our employees – from drivers to the board of directors – who are so vital to the health and continued success of our company.”

With more than 500 employees in Cedar Rapids, CRST has outgrown all of the company’s current facilities. The company will occupy two floors of the 11-story, 113,000 square-foot office tower, which includes eight floors of Class A office space (these buildings represent the highest quality buildings in their market) built above three floors of parking. The other floors will hold various commercial and retail tenants. CRST will keep the other company offices, maintenance facilities and training center at the current location on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids.

The building will be completed in the first quarter of 2016.

New CRST International Inc. World Headquarters Building to be Constructed in Downtown Cedar Rapids

1997-crst-internationalFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New CRST International Inc. World Headquarters Building to be Constructed in Downtown Cedar Rapids
Anchor tenant for building announced

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (June 6, 2014) – CRST International Inc. Board Chairman John Smith today announced that the new approximately $37 million company world headquarters will be constructed in downtown Cedar Rapids pending final approval of state and local financial assistance which is expected in mid-June. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled later this summer on the site of the former First Street Parkade, on First Street Southeast between Second and Third Avenues.

“All of the financial pieces and the partnerships we’ve been working on for many months have finally aligned to make construction of the new building a reality,” Smith said. “This would not have happened without many groups coming together. We’ve received tentative approval of financial incentives from the City of Cedar Rapids and the State of Iowa that helped make the building possible. The City has been extremely helpful and cooperative in moving this project forward. CRST is extremely excited to join the downtown business community.”

“Cedar Rapids is committed to downtown development, and this is an important investment to keep our City progressing into the future,” said Jeff Pomeranz, Cedar Rapids City Manager. “CRST is the ultimate Cedar Rapids success story. We appreciate the Smith family’s longstanding commitment to Cedar Rapids. This building will change the skyline of our city and we look forward to the additional new growth and development that this investment will inspire.”

CRST will occupy two floors of the 11-story, 113,000 square-foot office tower, which includes eight floors of Class A office space built above three floors of parking. The parking garage will accommodate approximately 240 vehicles, and ground-level retail space. The building will be completed in the first quarter of 2016.

Smith shared today that Bankers Trust will be the anchor tenant of the building, occupying the top two floors of the building in order to expand its commercial and private banking, residential mortgage and trust and wealth management services. The bank also is leasing street level space that includes a full-service retail branch, including a drive-through teller and ATM services.

“Bankers Trust is proud of the Cedar Rapids community and excited to be a part of this signature project,” said Patrick Deignan, president and CEO of Bankers Trust Cedar Rapids. “We appreciate the growth our customers have helped us achieve and see this move as a way of increasing our commitment to them, Cedar Rapids and the Corridor.”
As a result of this move, Bankers Trust will increase its office space in downtown Cedar Rapids by 50 percent. Since inception the Bank has grown to be one of the largest banks in the Corridor, now with over $430 million in assets. Bankers Trust is Iowa’s largest independently owned bank with consolidated assets of $3.4 billion.

The building is positioned to take advantage of the extraordinary river views and to provide maximum exposure from Interstate 380. It will be designed and constructed to accommodate the city’s future flood mitigation efforts. The second floor will cantilever and extend over the water.
There are balconies on the top five floors that will allow full views up and down the river. The space is column free for the tenants and offers a functional and efficient floor plan.
Marc Gullickson, President Midwest Region for Ryan Companies, will lead the team as general contractor. Dan Thies, President of OPN Architects, will lead the architectural team.
Dee Baird, president and CEO of the Economic Alliance, says this significant investment in downtown Cedar Rapids is a huge win for the city.

“CRST leadership has always been visionary, starting with a small local operation almost 60 years ago to now being a major international transportation firm employing thousands worldwide,” she said. “For CRST to invest nearly $37 million in the heart of Cedar Rapids shows their commitment to the city and their belief that downtown Cedar Rapids is open for business.”
