Five things officers will be watching for
During Operation Safe Driver Week 2025, officers will be on the lookout for the following five unsafe behaviors:
- Speeding: Staying at or below the posted speed limit isn’t just a rule; it’s a lifesaving habit. Officers will check to make sure you’re driving at safe speeds, especially in traffic or challenging weather conditions.
- Distracted driving: Distracted driving, like using a cell phone or other device, is a common issue. It only takes a second for something to go wrong, which is why officers will crack down on any driver caught not giving the road their full attention.
- Seat belt use: Make sure you’re always buckled up. Seat belts save lives, and officers will check that you and your passengers are safely restrained.
- Improper lane changes: Use those turn signals and double-check your blind spots. Cutting in and out of lanes without proper signaling can quickly lead to dangerous situations, and it’s something officers take seriously.
- Following distance: Tailgating gives you less time to react to sudden stops, which is why following at a safe distance is so important – especially in a commercial vehicle. Officers will be watching to ensure there’s enough space between vehicles on the road.
Protecting your record
If you’ve put in the work to keep a clean driving record, don’t jeopardize it. Tickets and warnings can impact your driving record, lead to fines or even result in disciplinary action from your employer. Plus, unsafe habits raise the risk of accidents, putting you and others at risk.
Make safety a priority by staying alert, following the rules, and maintaining professional driving habits.
Set an example for the road
