Drop and Hook
Definition: Swapping a loaded trailer for an empty one or vice versa.
Driver Example: “It’s a quick drop and hook at the yard, so I’ll be back on the road in no time.”
Live Load / Live Unload
Definition: When a driver waits while a trailer is being loaded or unloaded.
Driver Example: “This place takes forever – they’re doing a live unload, so I might be stuck here a while.”
Backhaul
Definition: A return load that brings the driver back toward their home base or original location.
Driver Example: “Got lucky and picked up a backhaul from Kansas – heading back with a full trailer.”
Deadhead
Definition: Driving without a load.
Driver Example: “I had to deadhead 150 miles to the next pickup. Not ideal, but it got me moving again.”
Power Only
Definition: The driver hauls a customer’s trailer using only the truck (tractor).
Driver Example: “It’s a power-only run – I just hook up to their trailer and go.”
