After two decades in the Marines, Clark opted to bring that knowledge of large-scale logistics to the private sector, founding Paratus Logistics 3 years ago, an agency with a sharp focus on project cargo – think infrastructure materials, boilers, heat exchangers. The kind of oversized freight that takes weeks and sometimes equipment as big as a 19-axle trailer to move.
Jim says he started Paratus in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with the intent of building a specialized freight agency that values precision, honesty, and real customer impact. With some specialty trailers, and the resources available through CRST’s independent contractor network, he’s a rapidly growing business.
“We book some of the biggest and highest-paying loads in the United States.”
“We book some of the biggest and highest-paying loads in the United States,” Jim says.
He says he’s learned that the key to success on project cargo is the same, whether in in service or the private sector: Educate your customer.
“Ask the right questions,” he says. “What does it cost you when something doesn’t arrive on time? Can you really afford to risk that with a cheaper option, with this much on the line?”
Combining education, consultation and math has made for a compelling sell for his customers. “I help customers see the value of investing in Paratus Logistics, and they keep coming back.”
“When your customers grow, you grow with them.”
The honesty of that approach, he believes, is the foundation of long-term success. “When your customers grow, you grow with them.”
While he’s partnered with CRST since beginning his business, Jim says he’s looking to expand his reach, further as his business grows, recruiting independent contractors with specialized experience in over-dimensional and overweight freight, particularly those with 4-axle heavy haul tractors.
Jim says he joined CRST out of necessity – he needed access to the large, capable driver pool CRST offers. But what’s kept him with CRST is the people – their professionality, their capabilities and their dedication to agents like himself.
“Having a team that understands my business and the ins and outs, that’s what matters,” he says. “That’s why I stay.”
