The journey to leadership 

Starting from the bottom
Grant’s career began at a young age, working at a family friend’s shop. “I started pulling weeds, then moved on to rebuilding engines and transmissions,” he says. he joined CRST as a basic technician. But he used that starting position to learn, setting the stage for future growth. 

Adopting a leadership mindset
Initially, Grant saw himself as a mechanic, not a leader. “I just wanted to work at a good company,” he says. Over time, though, he says he realized leadership isn’t just about technical skills – it’s about problem-solving, adapting to change and taking on responsibility. 

“Seeing someone go from struggling to excelling – that’s the best part.”

Helping others succeed
One of Grant’s favorite parts of his job is mentoring others. “Seeing someone go from struggling to excelling – that’s the best part,” he says. Supporting others and building relationships is key to moving into leadership. 

Grant’s key lessons for career growth 

  1. Start at the bottom
    “Sometimes you need to step back to move forward,” says Grant. Learning every aspect of the job will make you a better leader. 
  2. Speak up
    Fear held Grant back early in his career. “I wish I had spoken up sooner,” he admits. Great leaders communicate openly and advocate for improvements. 
  3. Stay open to learning
    “Learn from everyone – peers, supervisors, even junior team members,” Grant says. Growth comes from being curious and adaptable. 
  4. Embrace change
    The trucking industry evolves quickly. Staying flexible and ready for challenges is essential for long-term success. 
  5. Focus on the team
    Leadership is about empowering others. Build trust, encourage collaboration and support your team’s growth.
