CVSA International Roadcheck 2026: Inspection tips for drivers

This year’s Roadcheck is scheduled for May 12-14. Here’s what to expect and how to be ready

In the transportation industry, safety is critical – not just for drivers, but for the people around them. That’s why this month’s CVSA International Roadcheck 2026 – scheduled for May 12-14 – is so important.

During International Roadcheck, enforcement officers at weigh/inspection stations and pop-up inspection sites across the United States, Canada and Mexico will conduct the North American Standard Level I Inspection, a 37-step procedure focusing on both driver and vehicle safety.

While the inspection itself is familiar, two areas will get extra attention this year:

  • ELD compliance and records of duty status
  • Cargo securement

The good news? If you’re prepared, inspections are pretty straightforward.

It comes down to knowing what inspectors are looking for and making sure your truck and records are ready before you hit the road.

The bad news? If an out-of-service violation is identified, you may be forced to correct the violation before being allowed to leave, which can cost time (and money!) making the repair or even waiting for road service.

Read on to be sure you’re ready for what’s to come!

What to expect

A Level 1 inspection is the most thorough roadside inspection and covers both the driver and the vehicle.

On the driver side, inspectors will review:

  • Commercial driver’s license
  • Medical examiner’s certificate
  • Hours of service and ELD records
  • Seat belt use
  • Signs of fatigue or impairment

On the vehicle side, they’ll check:

  • Brakes and brake systems
  • Tires, wheels and rims
  • Lights and reflectors
  • Steering and suspension
  • Frame and coupling devices
  • Cargo securement

This is a full inspection, not just a quick check. Being ready ahead of time makes the process much smoother.

focus area 1

Focus area 1: ELD compliance

This year, inspectors will take a closer look at ELD records and how they’re being managed. That includes:

  • Accuracy of records of duty status
  • Unassigned driving time
  • Edits and annotations
  • Any signs of falsification or tampering

Even small issues can lead to violations if they raise concerns.

To stay ahead of it:

  • Keep your logs current throughout the day
  • Review your logs daily for accuracy
  • Properly document any edits or corrections
  • Make sure you understand how your ELD system works

If something looks off, it’s better to correct it early than explain it during an inspection.

Cargo securement is one of the most common reasons drivers are placed out of service.

Inspectors will be looking for:

  • Proper use of straps, chains and binders
  • Equipment that is not worn or damaged
  • Loads that are stable and evenly distributed
  • Securement that matches the type of freight

Before you start your trip:

  • Inspect all securement equipment carefully
  • Confirm your load meets requirements
  • Recheck your load after the first few miles
  • Continue checking at regular stops

Taking a few extra minutes here can prevent serious issues down the road.

What to do if you’re pulled in for inspection

Getting inspected doesn’t have to be stressful. A few simple things help everything go smoothly:

  • Stay calm and professional
  • Follow instructions from the inspector
  • Provide documents when requested
  • Take your time and don’t rush

Most inspections are routine. Preparation and attitude go a long way.

Why this matters year-round

Roadcheck may only last a few days, but the expectations don’t go away after it ends.

Drivers who stay inspection-ready year-round tend to:

  • Avoid violations and downtime
  • Maintain better safety records
  • Reduce unexpected repairs
  • Stay more consistent on the road

It’s not about preparing once. It’s about building habits that stick.
